The simplest way to understand the difference
Patients often compare Lipo 360 and a tummy tuck because both can improve abdominal contour.
They are not interchangeable.
Liposuction removes selected fat. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and can address abdominal-wall laxity when appropriate.
That distinction should be the starting point for the consultation.
When liposuction is the better fit
Liposuction is primarily a contouring operation.
If the patient has localized subcutaneous fat and relatively good skin elasticity, removing that fat may allow the skin to contract around the new contour.
Lipo 360 extends contouring around the trunk.
When a tummy tuck is the better fit
A tummy tuck is designed to remove excess abdominal skin and improve the contour of the abdominal wall.
It is particularly relevant after pregnancy or major weight loss when the skin itself has become the problem.
ASPS identifies abdominoplasty as a component of body contouring after major weight loss. ASPS — Body Contouring
What if there is both fat and loose skin?
That is common.
A patient may have residual fat around the flanks while also having excess skin across the lower abdomen.
In that situation, a combined or carefully sequenced contouring plan may be considered.
Why a flat stomach is not always realistic
The abdomen is influenced by much more than subcutaneous fat.
Ribcage shape, pelvic anatomy, muscle, visceral fat, skin quality and prior pregnancy all matter.
A responsible surgeon should describe an achievable contour rather than promise a perfectly flat abdomen.
One question I would ask
“If we removed the fat, would the remaining skin still bother you?”
If the answer is yes, liposuction alone may not solve the patient’s concern.
The bottom line
The best procedure is not the one with the most dramatic name. It is the operation that addresses the actual anatomical problem.
